Snetterton 12th September '04

Qualifying. Another early start and a two and a half hour drive to Snetterton. Windy cool weather with rain treatening on and off throughout the day. I had high hopes after the lap record at Combe. Chris in his 4-litre GTO came past on Revit Straight with sheer superior straight-line speed. Confusion from my pit signals meant I was not where I though I'd be on the grid. So suffice it to say third in class was not what I had in mind. Although I was optimistic, historically I have achieved better results in the race.

The Race. Yet again a great start, past the modern TR of Ray ready for a manoeuvre on David when he came across taking the space, past a 328 and into Richie's. Chris in the GTO ahead but wide, David preventing me from the apex with a spinner on the outside all make exciting stuff. The traffic causing me to ease off and as David found space, the slow starting John Marshall in his 328 passing me. I got to the apex of Sears only to be in a gear too high, but by the time I'd got to the Esses I'd made up what little difference it had made but not perhaps as close as I could or would have liked. The same 308 that held me up at Combe was now repeating the favour, I got along side into The Bomb Hole, and should have made it stick but my lack of confidence in others prevented me. The said 308 got by David so I was still up there with them although Chris was nowhere to be seen. Ray got past along Senna Straight on the next lap and I became out of touch with David.

I realised I was loosing out from the Esses into the Bomb Hole through Coram all the way up to Russell, this is about a third of the circuit. The spinner from the first corner retook me, and the others got smaller ahead. Another spinner this time a 308 on the exit of Sears. I lapped Colin in his 246 for the first time with the spinning 308 retaking position. By now it was a pretty lonely race apart from passing Colin again and a spinner at the Esses - some incompetent who was rejoining the track spinning yet again. So it was a nice trophy for 3rd, the car in one piece, no mechanical problems. As best in Group 1 for the year, I'm now the proud recipient of the 2004 Ferrari Formula Classic Trofeo GP1 trophy.

Acknowlegments go to Mary Harvey, Simon Cooke, Steve Clarke and Dave Barton for the photographs and all whohave supported me, without whom it would not be so much FUN.
