Brands Hatch 3rd July '04

Down to Brands on the day before made things a little easier thanks to Wil Arif and his wife Anna, who kindly provided overnight accommodation? The second thing I did when I woke up was to see what the weather was doing, as expected it was raining! Will said often it may not be raining at the circuit some 20 minuets away. We arrived at the circuit to find a dry track but, you guessed it not for long, it was without doubt Rob Wilson's box trailer saved the day weather wise - yet again as Oulton was also very wet.

Qualifying remarkably was dry and I have to say I was a little disappointed in my performance, 3rd in class behind David Barker in His 400 and Chris Drake in his 330GTO, who we hadn't seen since Combe last year. I cut my qualifying short, I'd had some smoke that I knew to be the crank scroll (no seal) not coping with the extra litre of oil to eliminate the potential oil surge. I stopped early just to check firstly the oil wasn't excessive or that it wasn't likely to cause a fire. I don't know if I had the extra laps if I'd have gone any better.

The Race I'd hoped for a good start like at Oulton, and as with most plans that relate to Motorsport that didn't happen. Lights out, a great start, but then now where to go, I was boxed in, the two in my class ahead disappeared round Paddock and all I could do was wait for a gap to appear. As things seemed to ease I was confronted with yellows (flags) and then saw debris and a spun 328 with another with frontal damage, one having gone into the back of the other. For me it was a disaster know even further back, seemed as though I'd slowed more than the rest and they were further away than ever, so it was head down and try to catch up. I could see the 400 but almost the length of the pit straight, although I was catching him slowly until more yellows, this time it was Chris in the GTO he'd spun to the inside of the exit of Paddock, leaving me in second chasing the 400 of David.

As I rounded Druids David suddenly was close, obviously in trouble I later found out he was switched to the wrong fuel tank so by the time he had released the belts change to the other tank I was secure in first pace for Gp1. I was so pleased to find I was right up towards the front in 7th overall, my highest finish to date.
