Its nice to see young folk appreciating the old stuff.
Qualifying turned out to be wet, very wet, the transition from understeer to oversteer was so quick it was like driving on marbles especially at Druids where a couple of cars had a spin possibly due a slight oil spill. Coupled with such slippery conditions, poor visibility and getting used to a new limited slip differential caused me not to enjoy the session at all. What made it even worse David in the 400 qualified over 11 seconds faster, if the race was to be wet he would be unbeatable! However nothing is certain in motoracing. The Race fortunately would be dry although some damp patches existed off line. This year no green lights remember just go when the reds go out, I found myself looking for space well before the first corner, it was a great start, I go to the apex of Old Hall the first corner, even though I'd started from the left side of the grid, past another then down the Avenue threaded my way to Cascades apex with what seemed relative ease. David was no where to be seen and I was in 1st position for Gp1. The 400 reappeared some distance behind I thought "No need to push too hard just concentrate on driving smoothly with accurate lines. I soon caught Colin Campbell in his lovely 246, no problem……..the first time, but the second time I got caught up with him at Knickerbrook and was slowed a little, though no fault of Colin I must add, he is always the Gentleman. The 400 dropped back and was not to be seen again, which left me to take a Gp1 win and 11th place overall. I found later David had brake problems. David said he thought at one point he was catching me, but I said I was pacing myself and the proof was I took fastest lap creating a lap record for Ferrari Formula Classic Gp1. |
